It is now time to vote for various issues including new laws, and oh, president. In a long campaign the candidates can often use negative ads to try to tell voters why they should not vote for the other person. Read the article below and add your opinion. In three to four sentences explain a negative campaign advertisement you have heard or seen and how you feel about it. Did it change your mind, was it unfair, or too mean? Explain.
On Election Day, kids say ‘no’ to negative campaign ads
Today is Election Day, when Americans will choose the next president of the United States. At KidsPost, we’ve written a lot about the election to help kids understand what they were seeing in other parts of the newspaper or on television. We explained presidential debates; we even came up with an art project you can do Tuesday night while you watch election results with your family.
But it was our story about political advertising that prompted Catherine Odey’s sixth-grade students at Rocky Hill Middle School in Montgomery County to write us letters with their opinions on negative ads.
(YouTube) - An ad run by President Obama‘s campaign attacks Romney for saying he would end government funding for PBS.
Regardless of who wins the presidential election, we hope all the politicians in the United States will pay attention to what these kids have to say:
“After reading the KidsPost article “Selling the President,” our class had a very intense discussion about the commercials. . . . I think that they are annoying and they are wasting money. For example, when I was watching ‘Jeopardy!’ one day, when it went to commercial break, the commercials went from Obama to Romney to Tim Kaine to George Allen! And since 99 percent of the things are bogus, they are wasting lots of money!”
— Arpan Barua, 11
“These ads are just stupid. The candidates are acting like a bunch of 3-year-olds fighting over a toy. Doing campaigns like the Big Bird commercials and saying the other candidate is telling lies is low. The candidates should be showing that they are honorable, kind, hardworking people.”
— Brittany Love, 11
“Negative ads are bad because not everything is true so they mislead voters.”
— Emma McGrath, 11
“I think candidates spend too much money on ads. I think that ads give false information and people can just tune in to the debates or read credible articles.”
— Cedric Starks, 11
“I feel that the ads are annoying and untrue. They don’t put anything new, and they never say anything positive about themselves. They only focus on the bad stuff about the person they’re running against.”
— Angela Grey-Theriot, 11
“Just because you say bad things about the other person doesn’t mean that the public will change their minds. Also, I think while President Obama and Governor Romney waste millions and millions of dollars on the ads that people don’t even listen to, they should help schools.”
— Lisa Patel, 12
“Instead of ads that attack each other, why not let people better understand their motives? They spend millions of dollars just for attacking and defending, like football. So let’s make the ads positive so we can really move forward.”
— Mei Lu, 12
I think it was unfair
ReplyDeleteThere is a negative campaign i have heard in the commercial. It says that Tim Kaine is not helpful to the community because he prefers just to protect other people in other states then the community he is in.Also people say he is not a perfect governer, president, judge,or anything because he is not ready for this.My opinion is that he is almost getting to the part where he can be anythig he wants,"IT IS A FREE COUNTRY FOR ANYONE IN THE UNIVERSE".

ReplyDeletei think that presidents should not do that because just like the kids say its like fighting over toys to see who rules the USA. I think its like that because they say things they might not do like lowering down the taxes. They lie and thats why I do not vote.
Well, I hope you vote on the issues that concern you when you get older. Also, you are too young to vote. You need to be 18.
DeleteMy opinion is that the ad for Big Bird that Obama should be president. the younger kids love Elmo and Big Bird.I think it is not fair that they are going to take Elmo and Big Bird away. Yeimmy Pineda
ReplyDeleteYEIMMY you are right but, what if some of the kids say that BIG BIRD and ELMO are just fake and not real?

ReplyDeleteIt is not nice to say mean things to other people because that hurts their feelings. For which president should win over taxes or college, and for schools. I think that Obama should.

ReplyDeleteit really doesn't matter which president wins because they are both alike in some ways.My opinion is that its really really rude to say stuff about Mitt Romney and Barack Obama. One day i was watching television and a ad about Mitt Romney showed its said he hired 100 men to build a bridge and they did.then Mitt Romney comes out of nowhere while there building a bridge and Romney tell them ''YOUR FIRED!''i was so sad i felt bad for the workers.i knew how they felt.Mitt Romney shame on you.
Betsaida where did you see that? But your right it is really rude to say stuff about Romney and Obama and plus sometimes people lie on the internent or T.V. daniela cruz53

ReplyDeleteMy opinion is that ROMNY and GORGE ALLEN should have lost by more. ROMNY would have sent imagrints back he could have ruined kids life . He would have deleted instagram. He would have raised taxes thair would be people living on the streats. YEA OBAMA ONE. Hears a negative comershal I heard that (Out of the blue a building crue was told told to build a 30 foot stage they built it ROMNEY said the plan is compleat you are all fired.)
I have heard that if Mitt Romney won for president he would of sent hispanics back to their home state. I also have heard that he would raise taxes and cut food stamps and others. I felt sad a little because of the poor. my opinion is that it is not nice and i don't like it at all its rude and mean. love brianna berry

ReplyDeleteI think the president should not waste the money on adds.Because if he loses the election he wasted the money for no reason.I think they should just make a better speech to make people vote.
You make some good points. Make sure you answer the question fully so you can get full credit.
DeleteMy opinion is that they should not go at eachother like that.I saw a ad that had aman talking and he was talking about how he was working .He was building a building and him and his team were working as hard as they could. They were buildng a office building. They saw MittRomney coming and he said that he fiered them for no reason. He said that they were in shoke. They were devestated at what he just said th them. They were crying and all there hard work went down the drain.I dont think that was right.I dont think tat was fare or nesasary.
ReplyDeleteAleasa Purce 53

DeleteMy opinoin is that there should be NO ELECTION DAY because whoever win to be the prisident of USA will put new laws. So, they should make a new speech , clearly so we the people can under stand. - Susana Hernandez
ReplyDeletePlease make sure you are reading and responding to the blog completely. Also you said you wouldn't vote because the person would bring new laws. You should explain that idea more. Why would that be a bad thing?
DeleteI think the adds are useless if the candidates don't use it to explain why they should become president not to offend the ones they are running against.
ReplyDeleteP.S this is Nicole Montoya
My opinion is that the negative ads during the presidential campaign were annoying. During the T.V, programs these ads would be on during the commercial break. It was annoying to see the same ads play over and over again. I thought that some of them said mean things about the candidates all the time. I'm glad they are over yay!
ReplyDelete- Sarah Salazar 53
your right they did just play them over and over again and i agree with you.
DeleteThey should not put negative ads because they mess up what they are say. If they dont vote there will be no laws. If some one wins they would follow the laws. The presidnt can take the ads off. So no one would get hurt.alexis fierros
ReplyDeleteThere are actually laws that require everyone to be allowed to share their point of view during elections. Presidents cannot pass this type of law without going through Congress and the Supreme Court. Many people would say this is unconstitutional.
DeleteAlso read through your response. It is a little confusing.

ReplyDeletei think the presidents should not waste money on ads because it is a waste on money that can go to school, and jobs.
Great Point! It would be nice for you to elaborate (add detail) and answer the question fully. You always have insightful comments. Please make sure you read and respond to all the requirements so you can get full credit.
DeleteThe commercial that I can remember that kept coming on while the election was on going, was the question 7 vote. I remember hearing vote for question 7 so that the schools can get more money for education. There were people that said the money would never go to the schools. I would just hope that now that question 7 has passed that the money would go to the schools as promised. Right now I can't say that the commercial was negative because the casino has not been built yet. The positive commercials made me tell my mom she should vote for question 7. I just thought the people that did not want the casino to come here in PG were people that just didn't want the traffic of other people coming from other states coming to the casino.

Alexia Senchanthisai Sec53 In my opinion I think these campaigns are a waste of time, I think they should focus on positive campaigning.
ReplyDeleteA negative campaign that I watched was “Another Broken Promise”, where Romney talks about how Obama failed to keep his promise to keep the GM plant open in Janesville, Wisconsin.
It made me feel that this ad commercial was unfair to Obama because he probably put much effort into keeping the plant running, but maybe he had many factors that were against him. Just because the plant closed doesn’t mean Obama didn’t try. This ad did not change my mind about Obama and his work .I think the ad was unfair because,of course, it doesn’t show the work behind the scenes.
