Is that a Metaphor or a Simile?

April is National Poetry Month.  Read one of the Shel Silverstein poems about Hippos.
Which of the poems do you like better?  Explain.  Identify three examples of figurative language.  What are they and why do you think the author uses them.

                                             Recipe for a Hippopotamus Sandwich
Hippo SandwichA hippo sandwich is easy to make.
All you do is simply take
One slice of bread,
One slice of cake,
Some mayonnaise,
One onion ring,
One hippopotamus,
One piece of string,
A dash of pepper--
That ought to do it.
And now comes the problem...
Biting into it!

Hippo's Hope

There once was a hippo who wanted to fly --
Fly-hi-dee, try-hi-dee, my-hi-dee-ho.
So he sewed him some wings that could flap through the sky --
Sky-hi-dee, fly-hi-dee, why-hi-dee-go.
He climbed to the top of a mountain of snow --
Snow-hi-dee, slow-hi-dee, oh-hi-dee-hoo.
With the clouds high above and the sea down below --
Where-hi-dee, there-hi-dee, scare-hi-dee-boo.
(Happy ending)
And he flipped and he flapped and he bellowed so loud --
Now-hi-dee, loud-hi-dee, proud-hi-dee-poop.
And he sailed like an eagle, off into the clouds --
High-hi-dee, fly-hi-dee, bye-hi-dee-boop.
(Unhappy ending)
And he leaped like a frog and he fell like a stone --
Stone-hi-dee, lone-hi-dee, own-hi-dee-flop.
And he crashed and he drowned and broke all his bones --
Bones-hi-dee, moans-hi-dee, groans-hi-dee-glop.
(Chicken ending)
He looked up at the sky and looked down at the sea --
Sea-hi-dee, free-hi-dee, whee-hi-dee-way.
And he turned and went home and had cookies and tea --
That's hi-dee, all hi-dee, I have to say.

I like the poem ( HIPPO SANDWITCH), because its funny how she said you just need the things then she said you need a slice of HIPPO. I thin the figuretive languige is simali because she is talking about a sandwitch and a hippo. I think they use it to try to make it funny the outher figure tive languige is metaphore I THINK THEY USE IT TO TRY O MAKE it funny.

  2. I like the poem because its funny and also sad. Its sad because one time the poem said that it was a unhappy ending and who would want a unhappy ending. Its funny because one time in the poem the poem said that proud-hi-dee-poop and when the poem said proud-hi-dee-poop i started laughing a little bit.So that is the reason why i think the poem is sad and funny.

  4. I like the hippo sandwich one its very funny because it makes no sense I think the figurative language is metaphor .To me it sees to be metaphor because there using the hippo sandwich probally o show that not all sandwiches are regular.

  5. I like this poem because it talks about a hippo's sandwich and I think it is referring to the size of the sandwich and it's a huge sandwich.
Hippo's hope is funny because it talks about the hippo flying and crashing but a hippo cannot fly.
Three examples of figurative language are:
    1. A hippo's sandwich which refers to the size of the sandwich.
    2. A hippo doesn't have wings,so it cannot fly.
    3. A hippo is big and heavy, it will crash if it tries to fly.

  6. I think the poem is an metaphor because a hippo can fly.You can not eat a hippo sandwich because that is impossible to eat it. How can hippos fly if they do not have wings on the sides.

I think that Recipe for a Hippopotamus Sandwich poem was better then HIPPO'S HOPE. I like Recipe for a Hippopotamus Sandwich poem better because it was funny cause it shows you how to make a hippo sandwich, which can not really happened. I also like it better because at the end there was a problem that it is gonna be hard to bite in to it, i think that is funny cause instead of it being hard to make the sandwich it was hard to eat the sandwich.I think the figurative language in Recipe for a Hippopotamus Sandwich is personification and denotation.I think it is personification because you can not really make a hippo sandwich. I think it is denotation because the word dash has another meaning.

The poem I think is better is the 2nd one because I like the figurative language .The 3 main figurative language in this poem is alliteration , hyperbole/exaggeration,and personification. I think this poem contains alliteration because when the poem said ,''high-hi-dee '' the hi- dee keeps repeating , I also think this poem contains hyperbole or exaggeration because a hippo canot fly unless it is a bird , and I think this peom also contains personification because I think only birds can fly I don't think people can fly unless we are in a plain ect.
    EXTRA CREDIT:
A hippo came to the end
    and asked Ben
    we came
    but it is lame
    so...
we need a pillow like a cloud
    a light like the sun
    balls like planets
    and need huge nets
    wait we aren't finished yet
    oh no ...
    we have a problem
    they are in outer space!
    I hate the end.

I like the poem next to the picture because it explains how to make a hippo sandwich, which is funny cause u cant, its impossible!:)Fly-hi-dee, try-hi-dee, my-hi-dee-ho is a onomonopia, he leaped like a frog and he fell like a stone is a hyperbole, & he sailed like an eagle is a hyperbole too! why because the 1st cause it makes noise, 2nd cause hippos cant leap like a frog or either fall like a stone,& 3rd cause hippos cant fly like birds, especially eagles they cant soar peacefully!

I like the poem because it was happy and it was sad to.it was happy because he wanted to fly and they sewed him some wings that could flap in the air. then, their was the unhappy ending were he flapped like a frog and then he fell like a stone and he broke all his bones.

  13. SARAH SALAZAR MOD 53 I like the first poem because it made me laugh and it taught me how to make a hippo sandwich. One figurative language is personification and another is alliteration, the last one is hyperbole. I think he chose these because so he could maybe make the things he uses in his poems to make funny ideas.
